Kyle Welcomes Central Texas Lobos soccer team to town

July 16, 2017

Kyle’s got kick.

The city held a ceremony Thursday to welcome its first semi-professional sports team, the Central Texas Lobos. Officials hope the new sports franchise will help promote the fast-growing city.

“Becoming a recreation and event destination in Central Texas is one of Kyle’s top priorities to support our city’s economic development,” Mayor Pro Tem Damon Fogley said at the event Thursday at Gregg-Clarke Park soccer complex, according to a city press release. “Because of this, we are very excited to be the hometown of the new Central Texas Lobos.”

The team, which will hold tryouts Saturday, will represent the Hays County and South Austin area in the Texas Premier Soccer League, an outdoor men’s soccer league. The team was founded by David Walding, the director of the Bernardo Kohler Center, an Austin-based group that provides law services to Texas immigrants.

Last month the franchise held a fan vote to name the team. Central Texas Lobos won with 46 percent of the vote, with “Hill Country Wolfpack” a distant second at 23 percent. That team name provides a particular tie-in to Kyle, as Lobos are also the mascot for Lehman High School.

“We’re proud to welcome the Central Texas Lobos to their new home in Kyle,” City Manager Scott Sellers said, according to the city press release. “This gives our community a new way to gather, adds cultural value, and shows that Kyle is expanding in a way that makes people want to be a part of this city.”

The team’s home games will be held at Gregg-Clarke Park. Admission to the games will be $2, with 10 percent of the proceeds going to the city, a Kyle spokeswoman said. The team will also help with field upgrades and will donate bleachers for the park, she said.

The Texas Premier Soccer League is an outdoor men’s soccer league founded by former pro player and head coach of the Houston Hurricanes, Brendan Keyes. It is sanctioned by US Club Soccer and affiliated with the USSF and FIFA.
