The city of Kyle is closer to having an organic grocer, while H-E-B LP is planning a multimillion-dollar facelift for one of its stores in Round Rock.

The projects are the latest developments as grocery stores continue expanding their footprint across the Austin metro as the area sprawls. San Antonio-based H-E-B has about 50 stores in the metro and continues to add new locations or enhance existing ones. H-E-B is looking to add a store in San Marcos, has set an opening date for its Manor store and confirmed plans for its third Georgetown location — but it has yet to announce anything in Del Valle where it owns property.

Meanwhile, Sprouts Farmers Market Inc. recently announced a groundbreaking for its Kyle store. The organic grocer previously said it intends to roughly double its Austin-area presence, to about 12 stores in the metro.

Based on project openings and announcements with completion dates in 2024, the Austin metro has a total of about 572,000 square feet of retail construction in the works for new and expanded projects, including grocery stores and other businesses, Weitzman reported. H-E-B accounts for nearly half of that new space, according to the retail report.

Sprouts breaking ground in Kyle

The city of Kyle announced Oct. 25 that Sprouts Farmers Market is breaking ground in the South Austin suburb that is home to more than 50,000 people.

Arizona-based Sprouts will anchor the Brick and Mortar District at Plum Creek, a four-building retail development that sits on nearly five acres at the northwest corner of Kohlers Crossing and Farm to Market Road 1626. The center is under development by Tennessee-based GBT Realty Corporation, which received up to $950,000 in incentives for the project. It's part of a massive 138-acre mixed-use community in Kyle called Brick and Mortar District.

The new store is expected to employ 80 full-time and part-time workers.

Retail space at the Brick and Mortar District at Plum Creek includes the more than 23,000-square-foot Sprouts and three retail buildings totaling more than 18,000 square feet. The Sprouts store is designed by BRR Architecture, and the retail shops are designed by MJM Architects. The retail development tapped Houston-based Arch-Con Corporation as general contractor.
